Mackenzie Icenogle says her dog Tulip accidentally startled an animal during a bathroom break, causing the frightened creature to climb up her leg and into her hair

Icenogle’s mom filmed the encounter, which she later shared on TikTok

Speaking with PEOPLE, Icenogle says, “I think I have a better chance of winning the lottery than this ever happening to me again”

One woman’s routine dog walk went south when an unexpected animal hitchhiked its way home with her.Mackenzie Icenogle tells PEOPLE that her dog, Tulip, had finally found the perfect spot to use the bathroom outside one day when the pup squatted and accidentally stepped on a mouse in the nearby grass.Speaking with PEOPLE, Icenogle, who posted a video of the aftermath, says Tulip and the mouse both shot into the air at the same time, startled by each other.

“In an effort to run away, the mouse decided to climb up my leg, making its way to my head, and perching on me, not wanting to get down,” she describes the moment. As it climbed up her body, Icenogle recalls noticing its large, “beady” eyes looking up at her.“Luckily, since I saw what it was before feeling it, it helped me stay calmer in that situation since I knew what kind of animal it was,” she says. “I would do terrible with spiders or snakes. It did have a very cute face!”

For the first 60 seconds of the encounter, Icenogle says she was alone, screaming outside as the mouse found safe lodging on her head, but quickly realized she needed to bring Tulip inside calmly before attempting to get the mouse out.“My instincts kicked in once I stopped screaming after the first minute, and I realized I needed to stay as calm as possible so I didn’t freak out the mouse/dog/neighbors.”“I was afraid of accidentally letting go of the leash,” she continues, adding, “Not only that, but I was also thinking of getting bitten, or pooped and peed on. Being 7 months pregnant, a rabies shot was the last thing I wanted to have to get done.”

She made her way back to the house, seeking aid from her mom, who was inside helping out with her other daughter. At the last minute, Icenogle decided to snag a quick picture of the mouse sitting on her head.“Unbeknownst to me, [my mom] was recording the whole encounter! After showing a few friends my experience, they convinced me to post on TikTok, thinking it could maybe go viral,” she shares. In her TikTok video, the mouse is seen nestled between the strands of Icenogle’s hair before she tilts her head and shakes it out, with her mom tapping a package.Asked why she waited to get back to her front door to remove the mouse, Icenogle replies, “I had to show my mom because I knew no one would believe me. I think I have a better chance winning the lottery than this ever happening to me again. It makes for a fun and traumatizing story.”
