The Federal Trade Commission warned in a report in February that buyers misplaced more than $10 billion to fraud in 2023.

It also requested if she had agreed to the transferal – to which she responded "no."

Manento then acquired a telephone name – purporting to be from the financial institution itself.

"Whereas I'm on the telephone, I informed my husband because… you already know, how scams are, we're… on top of things.

"So, I informed my husband, 'are you able to verify to be sure that this is truly Bank of America's telephone quantity?'" she advised NBC Connecticut.

ZELLE

The broadcaster, which investigated her claim final October, stated it had checked the quantity which despatched the text message.

"It was Bank of America. The number is listed on its web site, too.

"But the individual on the telephone who referred to as Manento someway, some way was undoubtedly not from her financial institution," concluded NBC CT Responds.

A spokesperson for the Bank of America informed the broadcaster that it, "will never ask a shopper to send money to themselves or anybody, ever."

The U.S. Solar has contacted the bank for additional comment.

ANTI-FRAUD ADVICE

The BoA has a fraud prevention page on its web site which says it has multiple layers of security safety to protect shoppers, clients, staff and the bank itself.

"In case you receive a suspicious name, textual content or e-mail from somebody claiming to be Financial institution of America, don't reply and don't click links or open/download attachments.

"As an alternative, ship it to abuse@bankofamerica.com and delete it.

"When you did present personal or financial info, contact us immediately at 800.432.1000," it recommends.

DIGITAL TOOLS

The Federal Trade Fee stated that in 2023, shoppers reported dropping extra money to financial institution transfers and cryptocurrency than all different strategies mixed.

"Digital instruments are making it simpler than ever to focus on hard-working People," stated Samuel Levine, director of the FTC's bureau of shopper protection.

Online buying issues have been the second most commonly reported within the fraud class.
