BBC Northern Ireland reporter David Capper has died aged 91

Former BBC journalist David Capper has died aged 91, it has been confirmed.

Capper was a correspondent on BBC Ireland and a well-known face for many on their TV screens.

The Belfast-born broadcaster reported for BBC Northern Ireland's Scene Around Six and was the national radio correspondent throughout a number of atrocities, akin to Bloody Sunday and Bloody Friday.

Having began his profession at Newtownards Chronicle, Capper coated his first major information story there, which was the sinking of the Princess Victoria in 1953.

Capper also spent a number of years working in Vancouver, returning to Northern Eire to edit an area paper, earlier than joining reporters at the Belfast Telegraph.

He later moved to the BBC workforce in Buenos Aires through the Falklands Conflict.

In complete, Capper labored with the BBC for 26 years and left shortly after reporting on the Enniskillen bomb in 1987.

Nevertheless, this didn't mark the top of his journalistic career, as he continued to work in media, advising creating radio stations abroad.

As for his personal life, Capper's household stated he ultimately settled in Donaghadee in County Down, where he previously spent quite a lot of childhood summers.

He is survived by three youngsters – Chris, Diarmit, and Samantha – and 9 grandchildren.

Following the sad news of Capper's demise, tributes flooded in.

Adam Smyth, director at BBC NI, described him as a 'journalistic icon' in a touching message.

'David was the epitome of neutral and courageous reporting in the public interest,' he stated.

'He was an eyewitness to a few of the most harrowing occasions of The Troubles, together with Bloody Sunday, and could possibly be absolutely relied upon to offer a trusted account of what he saw.

'Our deepest condolences go to David's family circle.'

Paul Clark, a presenter of UTV Stay and View From Stormont, shared an anecdote on X: 'I worked with David Capper within the 80s. One morning we heard a few loyalist incursion at Clontibret in Co. Monaghan. Gardai arrested a person referred to as Robinson. We questioned. DC rang the household residence to be advised that Peter had not returned house the previous night time. The remaining is history!!'

Ken Reid, the previous UTV political editor, penned: 'David Capper has died, aged 91. An exquisite journalist who brought insight and integrity to the career. Deepest sympathies to the family circle and associates.'
